Oster CKSTBR9050 bread machineThe Oster CKSTBR9050 Expressbake is a bread maker that bakes a rectangular 1-, 1.5- or 2-pound loaf. There are 13 pre-programmed settings in this machine. For smaller 1- or 1.5-pound loaves, there is an express bake setting which allows you to bake bread in just under 1 hour. Most of the other settings such as basic, French, or whole wheat will bake a 2-pound loaf in a little over 3 hours. Of course, the 13-hour delay timer that comes standard with most bread machines is also included in this one.

As for the design, the Oster CKSTBR9050 resembles a rice cooker. The body is a round shape, but its baking pan is rectangular so your bread will come out in a rectangular shape. There are two kneading blades that come with the bread machine, although you will only be able to attach one to the baking pan. The second one would be a spare. Interestingly, the kneading blade on most bread machines bake into the bread because there’s no where to dispose of it, but Oster included a “kneading blade removal tool” so that you can pull the blade out easily. Bread making tip: If you don’t want the kneading blade to be stuck in your bread, open your machine and remove it after the kneading cycle whenever possible. But try at your own risk because the rotator may be exposed to the dough and jam, and it could be difficult to clean.

With this bread maker we tested a few different settings. As usual, we made basic bread. We also made gluten-free and French bread. In terms of getting everything set up it was quite straightforward. The menu was easy enough to use. If you’re going to make small bread we recommend using the express options because this machine does take some time to bake in the other modes. The express options bake in 58 minutes. After baking the bread, the kneading blade/paddle will get stuck to the bottom of the bread. It doesn’t seem like there’s a way around this so you’ll need the kneading blade removal tool that comes with the bread machine. Or you could try to remove the blade right after the kneading cycle finishes.

We liked that although this machine bakes a large bread, it didn’t seem to hog up too much space on our kitchen counter. On the other hand, it didn’t feel as sturdy as some of the other bread machines like the Breville BBM800XL or Zojirushi BB-CEC20. And it did feel like there was a bit more noise than those machines.

The basic and French bread turned out good. We liked the crust on both of these. If you follow the recipes and instructions correctly, you’ll get a great crust and a soft inside. However with the gluten-free cycle we wished that the bread machine could mix the dough a bit better. We did think that the kneading blade was a bit lacking. If you’re looking for the best bread machine with a gluten-free setting, check out the Breville BBM800XL instead.

It’s not a fancy machine, and certainly has some minor flaws, but the Oster CKSTBR9050 does a good job baking basic bread. Overall, we think the bread maker is good value for the price.
